HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts 2015-16 Science and Arts Café lecture series will feature Henderson State University professor Dr. Travis Langley and several ASMSA faculty members.

The first lecture on Thursday, Oct. 8, features ASMSA French instructor Bryan Adams, who will present “French Crash Course Using the AIM Method.” AIM stands for Accelerative Integrated Methodology, which uses gestures, music, dance and theater to help students learn a new language. Adams’ lecture will help attendees learn some French using AIM during the session.

Sylvan Hills softball to host Fish Fry

SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) - They Sylvan Hills lady bears are hosting an all you can eat Fish Fry in Sherwood on October 9. 

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. October 9, there will be a spread of fried fish, chicken strips, drinks and cookies set out at the Sylvan Hills High School Cafeteria located at 484 Bear Paw Road in Sherwood. 

Tickets for adults are $15 and for children $10. Under the age 5 can eat free. To-go plates will be available. 

Catering of the food is being done by King Kat out of Carlisle, Ark.

Be sure to wish Gladys Marie Dunham Griggs a happy 100th birthday!

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) - One Arkansas resident is celebrating her 100th birthday on October 2. 

Gladys Marie Dunham Griggs was born October 2, 1915.  She was married to Gus Griggs and had four children: Kenneth Griggs, Donald Griggs, Fran Griggs Honeycutt and Franklin Griggs.  She has 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great- grandchild. 

Griggs moved to Jacksonville, Ark. in 1942 to work at the ordinance plant.  She worked there for three years and was the supervisor of powdered carriers on detonator 2.  She and her husband owned Griggs Grocery in Jacksonville for 15 years, and she is mostly known for her outstanding service as a teller at First Arkansas Bank, where she retired at age 75 after 33 years.  She said she would still be working if her husband and father didn't get sick.

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. - The Jacksonville Police Department is participating in the Crime Free Multi Housing and Crime Free Rental Property program, with the goal of keeping crime out of neighborhoods. 

Officials are encouraging property owners, managers and landlords in the community to participate in the opportunity to improve the town they live in. 

The Crime Free Multi Housing program was developed in 1992 in Mesa, Ariz. The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program has spread to nearly 2,000 cities in 44 U.S. states, five Canadian Provinces, Mexico, England, Finland, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Puerto Rico. The Crime Free Multi Housing program was designed to reduce crime, drugs and gangs on apartment properties.

NLR man arrested for Family Dollar robbery


JACKSONVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) – A North Little Rock man has been arrested in connection with a Jacksonville Family Dollar robbery.

Around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the suspect walked into the Family Dollar at 1700 South First Street displaying a handgun and demanded money.

37-year-old Julian Shavers was arrested later on Wednesday and charged with aggravated robbery and felon in possession of a firearm.

According to police, there were no injuries.

Nestled on 100 acres of land on Stagecoach Road in Little Rock sits a castle fit for a queen or king and now, open to the public for events. The Castle on Stagecoach has been offering the venue for rentals suitable for all types of events including weddings, corporate parties, bridal showers, holiday dinners and so much more.  

The owners decided it was time to start a monthly event in an effort to allow anyone in the public to come enjoy a champagne brunch, tour of the grounds and enjoy live music.

Jacksonville PD announces first certified multi housing in Crime Free Program

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. - The Jacksonville Police Department is proud to announce that the first multi housing property is set to become CERTIFIED in our Crime Free Multi Housing Program on September 27 at 6 pm.

The Jacksonville Police Department acknowledges that Eastwood Apartments at 1011 S. James St. has completed the 3 phase program in order to become certified.

Certification is awarded after the minimum requirements are met or exceeded. The requirements include background screening, implementing the Crime Free Lease Addendum, door and window security, landscaping, lighting and attendance of our Crime Free Training class.
