HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - The City of Hot Springs received approval from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality Wednesday to begin clearing the sidewalk near the "yellow brick" structure adjacent to the Majestic Hotel.

In February of 2014, parts of the Majestic Hotel in Hot Springs, Ark. went up in flames. Over a year later, debris from the fire still covers the sidewalk.

The City of Hot Springs is taking over the project after giving the property owner over a year to dispose of the rubble. The project will include construction of a fence barrier to ensure pedestrian safety. The property owner will be billed for the cost of the project. The County Judge Rick Davis has agreed to waive landfill fees for debris disposal.

“We’re very pleased and excited to soon be able to provide pedestrian access to our residents and visitors,” said City Manager David Watkins. “I’d like to thank the citizens of Hot Springs, particularly those in close proximity to the Majestic Hotel, for their patience as we worked with the proper authorities to achieve approval for sidewalk clearance.
