Max's Take: Ark. National Guard Soldiers back on home turf

Max's Take: Ark. National Guard Soldiers back on home turf

These are some of the best stories to cover as a reporter, soldiers coming home after deployments overseas. Today I went to Central Flying Service in Little Rock where about 60 Arkansas National Guard members came home after serving on a mission in Kosovo. Before they arrived, families filled the lobby area, many armed with Welcome Home signs and T-shirts. And when they arrived, cheers exploded and it was fun to see loved ones standing on tip toes and peering around searching for their soldier coming home.

One soldier from North Little Rock came home just in time for his wedding in two weeks. Captain Patrick Hawkins says his future bride planned everything while he was overseas. She said she gave him options to think about while in Kosovo but jokingly said they were all hers. His fiancee said what she missed most was having a "piece of her famliy" missing for the past year.

I also had a chance to speak with the Pearce family from Bee Branch.

LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- Team Little Rock deployers will receive "rock star" treatment during a Welcome Home Warriors homecoming event April 1 at 5 p.m. at Hangar 1080 on base.

Deployers will receive a true hero’s welcome as they walk down a red carpet flanked by well wishers waving American flags. The event is designed to recognize individual deployers who returned home through commercial airports, said 1st Lt. Michael McKenna, Welcome Home Warriors project officer.

"These people came home from a six-month, eight-month or year-long deployment and didn't get the same welcome as the big groups [of deployers]," said Lieutenant McKenna. "This is [the base community’s] chance to show them how much we appreciate all they have done."

The party atmosphere features fun food like hot dogs and chili, non-alcoholic beverages, music and door prizes.
