The hardest part

The hardest part

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Have you ever been asked that question?  Most of us have.  As a practicing veterinarian, the answer has to be euthanasia, putting a pet "to sleep."  The heartbreak travels from the pet owner to the veterinarian, to the assistants, to the secretary.  It has to be one of the most difficult, saddest moments.

To quote an author from Parade Magazine, "We've come to embrace our animals as family members.  We are not meant to lose our children.  And yet we take pets on, knowing we'll have to lose them.  It's the package deal, to the very end."  I could not have said it better.

But what makes euthanasia even more heartbreaking is when I recommend a treatment or referral to a specialist, and the client cannot pursue my recommendation because of money.  We all understand it.  Everything costs, and nothing is free.  The euthanasia procedure do

Get ready for fall with Fido

Get Ready for Fall with Fido

If you’re anything like me, it’s likely that you’ve been longing for the cooler temperatures and colorful leaves of fall.  But, if you own a furry Fido, soon more may be falling than the leaves!  Fall shedding for your dog is right around the corner, and although annoying…..it is perfectly normal.

Dogs typically lose their winter coat in the spring, when it is replaced by a shorter, lighter one for summer. In the fall, this cycle is reversed, as the summer coat is shed to make room for heavy protective fur for winter. The change is most obvious in "double-coated" breeds such as collies and shelties. These breeds carry not only a protective long overcoat, but also a soft, insulating undercoat -- and they lose lots of fur from both in the spring and fall.

The amount of shedding varies widely from breed to breed.

Why purchase heartworm preventative from vet?

Why purchase heartworm preventative from vet?

Why should you purchase your pet's heartworm preventative from a veternarian instead of an internet pharmacy?

There is a very, very simple answer!  The pharmaceutical companies that make heartworm preventatives will guarantee their products when you purchase from your veterinarian, but will not guarantee products purchased through Internet pharmacies.  We know that nothing in life is 100%, and the same is true of heartworm preventatives.  Regular and consistent use of heartworm prevention remains our best tactic in the battle against heartworm disease, but it is possible, though rare, for a pet who is on heartworm prevention to contract the disease.

If your pet tests positive for heartworms, and your veterinary records indicate consistent use of preventatives and annual heartworm testing, then the pharmaceutical company is willing to pay toward your pet's treatment expenses, offsetting the cost significantly.  We have

Joey's Cute Pet Photo Contest

Joey's Cute Pet Photo Contest

It's that time of the year again where I get to have my very own contest - Joey's Cute Pet Photo Contest for all pets!

My friends at Bedford Camera & Video have generously produced a beautiful coffee mug and mouse pad for the winners to choose from. Now, because I think every pet is cute I randomly select the winners each week.  It is very important when you upload your photo to Today's THV website, include name of pet and where you live in the description. Eleven winners will be selected during the month of July and shown on Today's THV Morning Show.

This contest is for Arkansas residents only. Thanks for playing along! -- Joey
